That’s all.

Long Time No Write

Slack. There is no other word for it. I have the tenuous excuse of being a super busy midwifery student with three part time jobs at last count, but that does not really cut it, now does it?

So, my thought for the last couple months has been:

You are a unique, wonderful being, created on purpose, for a purpose.

It is slowly becoming a reality. Writing this in a strange town, far from home, with no friends close and feeling like the sunshine and wind, the amazingly towering pine trees and the wonderful red dirt are all gifts.
I am sure there is some cutting political or social commentary coming up in the next edition.

A question …

So,

if we accept the theory of evolution currently being promoted as gospel truth (which I am not so opposed to in many respects), then every biological entity currently present on the planet has arisen from a presumably more primitive predecessor who was (through some genetic freak known as mutation) more aptly fitted to survive in it’s environment.

ie. Survival of the fittest.

Which means that throughout the [insert chosen timeframe] the earth has existed and been inhabited by biological entities many, many, many, many have been made extinct. Since humanity is a relative newcomer to this game of marbles we call existence we can’t very well have been responsible for the majority of extinctions which have occurred in the life of the planet.

Are you following me here, it’s getting logically twisty, but interesting, I hope.

I have two questions arising from this set of (what appear to be) facts.

  1. Why aren’t the bilbies, whales, rare ecuadorian spotted tree sloths etc etc etc evolving to cope with their environment, which includes humans? Or are they?
  2. Is it really more important than millions of dying people?

Personally I like the environment. It keeps me alive too and I would like my grandchildren to be able to experience the amazing splendour of the created world. I even recycle and farm worms. It’s just an intriguing example of our willingness to only hear what suits us.

Anyone want to argue??

Things I learned reading fantasy novels

  • Someone has to step up
  • Evil often appears beautiful
  • Sometimes good people choose to do nothing
  • There will always be casualties
  • A hero always has integrity
  • Good endings are not always happy
  • Every hero needs a side-kick
  • War is always ugly
  • It will never be the simple way
  • Plans rarely survive an encounter with the enemy

One more challenge

Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.

Helen Keller

I’ve had a few conversations along these lines lately. Risk is part of living and we can’t avoid it. Perhaps manage it.

I refuse to one day realise I am mostly dead and have never done any of the things I really wanted to. I also do not want to be dying and realise I am not a person I like or respect.

So, on with the daring adventure. This morning it is called paperwork! Tomorrow, who knows.

random things

I consider that the chief dangers which confront the coming century will be religion without the Holy Ghost; Christianity without Christ; forgiveness without repentance; salvation without regeneration; politics without God; and Heaven without Hell.”

William Booth in: ‘The War Cry’, 5 January 1901.

“Dear sir,
In response to your question ‘what is wrong with the world,’ I am.
Yours Truly,
G.K. Chesterton.”

The good things about politics

Yes, I know you are all now looking at me with disbelief and sheer terror in your eyes. But you all know I love a good argument (not that there appears to be any of this is Australian politics these days). And I have to admit that the Australian political scene has provided me with much entertainment over the last 18 months or so. Therefore, I submit to you, my discerning victims … er … readers:

A few good things about politics:

  • dramatic entertainment to rival anything produced in Summer Bay or Ramsey St
  • election campaign spin off shows and Clarke and Dawe of the 730 report – legends.
  • the opportunity to find out what is really wrong with and/or happening in our country – you carefully listen for what is NOT being said
  • The wonderful person(s) who put up anti-labour signage of a very real and heartfelt nature along the Cargo Rd. You are a true hero and if I knew you I would shake you warmly by the hand. Thank you.

Seriously – I love politics.

Hello world!

Well, hello indeed – wait – did that news reporter just use the word gunk?  What is the world coming to?

This is a pressing question, and not just in regards to the low standard of our national news reporting. I have more questions that beg answering, possibly in new an interesting ways, or maybe just old and interesting. Stay tuned.
